Advanced: adjust the forecast

Weather data: Open-Meteo. Canadian postal codes use OpenStreetMap Nominatim. This is an estimate, not a school-board announcement. Estimate only. Check your board.

Ontario does not flip one provincial switch for a snow day. District school boards decide whether schools are open. Student transportation consortia, which the boards form together, often decide whether the buses run. Those can be different decisions: a cancelled bus and an open school is a normal Ontario winter morning, not a contradiction.

The weather is not one climate. Toronto is moderated by Lake Ontario. Barrie, the London region, and the Georgian Bay and Lake Huron shores sit in lake-effect snow belts and are used to bigger totals. Ottawa is colder. Windsor sees less snow and more ice. The predictor keeps a saved profile for the cities on this site and uses a typical Ontario default everywhere else, which can overstate a closure in a town that shrugs off 15 cm.

Announcement habits differ by consortium. Some publish a target window; others simply say they post when the decision is made. Treat any clock time on a consortium site as their current practice, and still look at that site in the morning. This page cannot promise a time.

Questions parents ask

Who announces an Ontario snow day?

Your school board announces a school closure. The transportation consortium that serves the board usually announces bus cancellations. School Bus Ontario publishes a directory of those consortia if you are not sure which one covers your address.

Does a cancelled bus mean the school is closed?

Often it does not. Many Ontario boards keep schools open when buses are cancelled and leave the trip to families. Read the board's own inclement-weather note before you treat a bus cancellation as a day off.
