Manitoba school divisions make their own winter calls. Winnipeg is the page we maintain in detail. The rest of the province is scored with the Manitoba default: a typical snow tolerance and high cold sensitivity, because a still, very cold morning is a familiar reason to cancel buses.

Wind is the other half. Open highways drift shut with less new snow than a sheltered city street. If the forecast shows strong gusts on top of even a thin cover, the wind factor moves the bus score. The rural setting adds more, for longer routes outside the Perimeter.

The Winnipeg School Division's site is linked from the city page. Other divisions serve neighbourhoods in and around the city. Confirm the division on the school's own site before you rely on a name you remember from a previous winter.

Cities

  • Winnipeg — Snow-day forecast for Winnipeg, where wind chill and drifting snow both count.
  • Thompson — Thompson forecast point: 126.7 cm of snow a year and a January mean of -20.3°C in ERA5, 2014–2023.

Places without their own page

These forecast points were checked and left unpublished. The hub search still scores them. A missing page is not a closure notice.

  • Brandon. ERA5 snowfall 86.2 cm and January -13.6°C are too close to Winnipeg (89.2 cm, -14.2°C) to justify a separate page in the same province.

Questions parents ask

Is there one Winnipeg snow-day announcement?

No. More than one division serves the capital region. A closure in one division is not a closure in the next. The predictor is a weather estimate for the location, not a division-by-division feed.

Why is cold weighted more heavily here than in Toronto?

The provincial default uses high cold sensitivity. Apparent temperatures at or below −30°C add more points, including a small extra on the bus score, because extreme cold is a routine operating problem on the Prairies.
